Earth & Space Research (ESR) is a Seattle-based, nonprofit institute specializing in oceanographic research. Our mission is to increase societal understanding of the Earth system through scientific research and public education.

Research at ESR covers a wide range of topics from polar oceanography to equatorial studies. To find out more about what we do, check out some of our current research. Also take a look at our publications and presentations lists to see some of our past and present work.

ESR's main office is in Seattle, WA with branch offices in Oregon and New York. You can find out more about us, including contact information, through our About ESR page. Our staff pages also contain information about who we are and what we are interested in.

Tools, Models, Datasets, and More
ESR Products Monthly ENSO maps, PDO index maps, Polar Tide Models, Antarctic Tide Gauge Database, and more.
New at ESR
Antarctic Ice Loss ESR Senior Scientist, Laurie Padman, is a co-author on a recent paper in Nature entitled "Antarctic ice-sheet loss driven by basal melting of ice shelves". Learn more here.

OSCAR Update ESR Senior Scientist, Kathleen Dohan, is Principal Investigator for the Ocean Surface Current Analyses Real-time (OSCAR) project, which calculates ocean surface velocities from satellite fields. OSCAR surface currents are tracked on the JPL/NASA website, Physical Oceanography Data Center (PO.DAAC) and now on the new visualization tool State of the Ocean (SOTO). More user information for SOTO is available here.

Aquarius Mission Update The Aquarius / SAC-D Mission is successfully streaming real-time salinity data and providing scientists with NASA's first global map of salinity. The first image and accompanying data and mission history are available on JPL's Photojournal, the NASA Aquarius page and the official NASA press release; Aquarius Yields NASA's First Global Map of Ocean. Aquarius is the lead story on This Week@NASA. For more information, please see Aquarius Image Gallery and Animation. (Updated January 17, 2012)

Aquarius Mission Outreach Register Here for the upcoming Aquarius / SAC-D Webinars on May 1st and May 3rd, 2012. This two-part webinar series hosted by COSEE focuses on using Aquarius data and concepts in the classroom. While designed for educators, anyone can join the webinar to learn more about inquiry-based techniques for teaching and learning about Aquarius, using real data. These concept-map based webinars include tips, examples and links to resources that you can use to bring the world of Aquarius into your own classroom or teaching situation. Learn more here, about the series of webinars, and how to access the archived sessions.
